PSI’s contracted lab utilizes the most sensitive equipment, proven processes and highly skilled personnel to deliver timely, accurate and reliable results. We'll find out—using the optimal combination of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) and enzyme immunoassay (EIA).

Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS)

To help us "find the answers" we use gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), the "gold standard" of the industry. GC separates the components of a mixture and MS characterizes each component individually. By joining the two techniques we can qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate many chemical compounds.

It's the "gold standard" in drug testing because it positively identifies the presence of a particular substance in a given sample. The GC/MS method is ideal for confirmation testing performed on a second independent portion of the original specimen.

Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS)

Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry. LC/MS provides very high sensitivity and specificity. When a second phase of mass fragmentation is added it's called tandem MS or MS/MS. MS/MS is a more powerful technique to "find out" — to quantitate low levels of target compounds in the presence of a high sample matrix background.

Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)

Generally a first step in our process of "finding out", enzyme immunoassay (EIA) is a biochemical methodology that detects the presence of multiple drugs and/or drug metabolites. By utilizing cloned analyte-specific enzyme donors, EIA offers consistent reproducibility of results. The outcomes are therefore more accurate and dependable.

MRO:

In addition to Lab Confirmations, PSI provides MRO services to employers, courts, clinics and Third Party Administrators. Our contracted certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) helps protect the rights of the employee and employer.

Our MRO will review both positive and negative laboratory reports to include personal telephone consultation with positive employees to determine if they have a valid prescription and determine whether they have a valid reason for the outcome of the test. Some drugs such as opiates or amphetamines, may carry a reasonable explanation for use. Our MRO is available to our clients for questions/concerns.

Federal testing requires MRO interpretation. Non-regulated testing allows the employer to determine whether or not to attach this service to their drug-testing program. It is important to remember that, without this service, employers may face some liability when determining the legitimacy of a positive Laboratory result. It is the responsibility of the client to know the drug testing laws and procedures for their facility.
